Angelina Jolie has been one of the biggest names in Hollywood for years. She's also become a bonafide action star, starring in films like Salt, Lara Croft, Maleficent, and the upcoming Marvel film, Eternals. Yesterday, Jolie appeared at the UK premiere of Eternals alongside co-stars Salma Hayek and Lauren Ridloff. For her role as Thena in Marvel's Eternals, Jolie had to learn how to use a lot of weapons. Jolie's character in the film has the power to create several different weapons, which lead to a pretty intense training regime. She tells Entertainment Weekly, "It is one of the weirdest things to train for because you're throwing things, grabbing things, breaking things in half. You feel a little nuts. You're just throwing your hand out as if you're thinking, 'Is that a sword? Is that a spear? Is it a lasso? What am I doing?' Then you get into it and it gets really fun, but it's a puzzle."
For her iconic role as Lara Croft, Jolie had to really train hard. Jolie says that she did a variety of different workouts to prepare. "I learned all these different skills. They put up a boxing bag and a bunch of power bars in my living room for like eight months," she told NY Rock. "There was also bungee ballet, diving, and weapons training and kickboxing, and everything from yoga to soccer and rowing. And I learned how to sword fight."
Jolie's trainer, Simon Crane, tells UsWeekly that he makes sure to focus on muscle building with the actress. "She has to have 70% carbohydrates and 30% protein diet with an anaerobic training regime as opposed to aerobic, so she can put muscle on without losing weight. Sticking to four or five meals a day routine as much as possible."
Jolie tells USA Today that to prepare for her role as Maleficent, she had to strengthen her core, and worked with her friend and stunt coordinator, Eunice Huthart. She said that this process involved doing workouts that she wasn't a huge fan of. "She made me do yoga. And I have no patience for yoga," says Jolie. "It's not something I do easily, because I'm not a still person. But I was forced to do yoga because (to fly) you have to have your core strength to be able to hold yourself."
Jolie notably had a double mastectomy after finding out she had the breast cancer gene, and she also revealed that she has Bell's Palsy on one side of her face. She tells Vanity Fair that these health scares reminded her to put her own well-being first and take care of herself. "Sometimes women in families put themselves last," she says, "Until it manifests itself in their own health.
