Chamika Karunaratne Facts
Chamika, born into a family of sportspersons, was a junior national champion in javelin throwing. He also went on to compete in badminton at the international level. In February 2021, he and his older brother Niluka Karunaratne participated in the 1st round of the men’s singles event of the Sri Lankan national badminton championship.
Niluka is widely regarded as the number one male badminton player in Sri Lanka. As of September 2022, Niluka was Sri Lanka’s most decorated badminton player with a record 21 medals to his name at international events including 9 ‘Gold’ medals. By this time, he had also won the national badminton championship 17 times, the most by a Sri Lankan badminton player.
Chamika first came into the spotlight on the cricketing scene in August 2018 when Sri Lanka Cricket (the governing body for cricket in Sri Lanka) named him in a preliminary squad of 31 players for the 2018 edition of the Asia Cup, a men’s continental cricket tournament that was founded as a measure to promote goodwill between Asian countries.
In December 2018, he was named to the Sri Lankan squad for the 2018 edition of the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Emerging Teams Asia Cup, a men’s List-A cricket tournament that was established to develop the talents of the most prominent young cricketers of Asia.
Chamika starred in the semi-final of the tournament, with his spell of 4/31 in 8.1 overs helping Sri Lanka restrict Bangladesh to a below-par total of 237 runs. Sri Lanka went on to win the match by 4 wickets and then upset India in the final of the tournament, winning by the thinnest of margins – 3 runs.
He eventually made his test match (and international) debut for Sri Lanka in February 2019.
In September 2021, he was included in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 edition of the ICC (International Cricket Council) World T20.
