Lovato does a lot of traveling and touring. She tells Women's Health that she makes sure to stay healthy while on the road. "My routine is different on the road than when at home," she says. "Performing and travelling means I have to fit in a workout whenever I can find the time. Late-night cardio sessions are not unheard of.
Lovato is all about self-care. "I believe [self-care] is like a pyramid," she said to POPSugar. "There are three things that you need to feel great. There's physical fitness, nutrition, and mental health. I think it's important to take care of yourself emotionally and physically, but mainly emotionally, because if you're not taking care of yourself emotionally, your mind can go to dark places. It's important to learn to love yourself for who you are, and accept yourself."
Lovato is open about her love of martial arts and fighting. She tells POPSugar, "My favorite workout is ju-jitsu. I love training ju-jitsu. When you're rolling with somebody, you're constantly thinking of defending or attacking moves, so it's kind of meditative in a way, but it's also a great workout when you're training — when you're really moving around with somebody."
In order to get through her performances, Lovato has to have good stamina. She tells Women's Health that there are certain exercises that help her. "Functional training is key for my body. My shows are really energetic so I try to train my body for the dancing and physical elements of my performances. It's tougher than it looks!"
Lovato tells Women's Health that she sets one day aside to recover. However, she doesn't just sit around on those days. "I don't rest on my laurels on my day off. I really look forward to active recovery like yoga or just walking. It keeps me focused on where I want to be with my body."
