A distinctive shingle-clad home designed to simultaneously push the boundaries and blend into the natural environment has sold for $3.5m in Ocean Grove.
Local buyers secured the luxury four-bedroom house at 27 Alfred Court after a seven-month campaign that attracted largely Melbourne interest.
Ocean Grove builder Sam Van Deuren, of VAND Builders, and his wife Jess originally built the home for their own family but put it on the market soon after to pursue their next project.

Every blackbutt shingle was made and laid by hand at the Yellow Gums estate residence, which backs onto the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve.
Named ‘Bundaleer’, which means among the trees, the home’s interior also showcases natural finishes, curves and timber accents.
Fletchers, Queenscliff agent Liam Rock said the buyers had relocated to Ocean Grove some time ago and were looking for more space, which the 2480sqm property afforded.
“The actual quality of the build and the high-end finishes just stood out,” Mr Rock said.
“People really appreciated the design. The shingles are obviously a different sort of material that they built with, but it coincides with the natural earthy tones throughout and also the landscape.
“They did go in a different direction and they took to the next level – it was a bit daring but they absolutely nailed it.
“In the end it was the finishes and the style that everyone was commenting on.”
Mr Van Deuren and his brother, fellow builder Ben, have set the benchmark for the exclusive Yellow Gums estate.
Mr Rock said the $3.5m sale price was second only the $3.6m off market sale of Ben’s house across the road late last year.
Timber also featured heavily at the five-bedroom house at 18-19 Alfred Court, which he described having a slightly wider appeal due to its “more traditional” design.
Bundaleer was originally listed with $3.6m to $3.95m price hopes but the campaign coincided with the market softening.
Mr Rock said the number of sales between $3m and almost $7m in Ocean Grove over the past five years highlighted demand at the top end.
“There is confidence with people to spend that kind of money in Ocean Grove and that stems from the Melbourne network, people moving down this way, and country people that are downsizing off farms,” he said.
“Having something like that in Yellow Gums, where you have got a bit of space, that is still downsizing for them.”
It’s not the first time VAND has impressed with its builds — Sam’s previous Ocean Grove home had black ‘dragon scale’ steel shingles that caught the eye of buyers based in California.
